ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Reviving the historical practice of singers accompanying themselves in a vibrant collective gesture is the idea behind this Ensemble: five voices blend with the harmonies of five instruments, resulting in a uniquely coloured sound. The Ensemble Concerto di Margherita was founded in Basel in 2014 by Francesca Benetti, Tanja Vogrin, Giovanna Baviera, Rui Staehelin and Ricardo Leitao Pedro during their studies at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. The repertoire on which the ensemble focuses its research is the Italian madrigal repertoire of the late 16th century, with a particular focus on composers who were active at the Este court in Ferrara such as Giaches de Wert or Ludovico Agostini. Particular attention goes to the compositions dedicated to the Concerto delle Donne in Ferrara such as the madrigals for one, two, three sopranos by Luzzasco Luzzaschi in which the female vocality of the Ensemble is exalted.
