Evangelina Mascardi, lute
Evangelina Mascardi is regarded as one of the leading lutenists active on the international concert scene. Born in Buenos Aires in 1977, she graduated in classical guitar and began her performing career at a very young age. In 1997 she moved to Europe to study lute at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis (Switzerland), where she earned her Solisten Diplom in 2001. For over a decade she performed as a continuo player under the direction of, among others, Jordi Savall (Hespèrion XXI), Marc Minkowski (Les Musiciens du Louvre), Andrea Marcon (Venice Baroque Orchestra), Giovanni Antonini (Il Giardino Armonico), Chiara Banchini (415), Alfredo Bernardini (Ensemble Zefiro), Sir John Eliot Gardiner (Monteverdi Choir), and Simon Rattle (Berlin Philharmonic), with whom she recorded more than 30 CDs. Widely acclaimed by critics, she has also performed as a soloist at major European festivals and dedicated many solo recordings to the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, Sylvius Leopold Weiss, Bellerofonte Castaldi, and Laurent de Saint-Luc, released on labels such as ORF-Alte Musik (2005–2011), Musique en Wallonie (2018), and Arcana (2011 and 2022). Her recent albums, Bach: Complete Lute Works and Selected Works for Lute by S.L. Weiss, have received numerous awards, including the Diapason d’or from the French magazine of the same name. Evangelina Mascardi teaches lute at the ISSM “Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia” in Rome.
